Manea is a new visitor centre in the Northland region which will tell the story of Kupe in a unique and compelling experience which combines live theatre with cinematic effects and projections. Kupe is a larger-than-life figure who features in many maori migration and arrival legends, and who holds a special place in the local history of the area.
The centre will be modelled on a traditional meeting house, adapted to the demands of a high-tech digital theatre and performance space. It will also include formal powhiri and exhibition display spaces.
Complementing the visitor centre will be a commercial centre, accommodating cafe/restaurant, retail, and visitor facilities.
